Homemade Masks in Boise

The continued spread of COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, continues to impact every aspect of our daily lives. Unfortunately, this respiratory virus can be transmitted from person to person with a simple sneeze or couch. Even individuals who do not show any symptoms yet have the virus can unknowingly spread it rapidly. Because this virus is still a threat to the entire population, the CDC is encouraging all individuals to wear protective masks over their noses and mouths when leaving the house.

The Vital Need for Homemade Masks

Personal Protective Equipment, known as PPE, can potentially prevent the wearer from contracting an infection. PPE includes specially designed N95 masks and surgical masks, however, due to a shortage in supply, government officials are asking that these items are reserved exclusively for the use of individuals in the healthcare industry. Thankfully, there are alternatives for the general public, including homemade masks.

The bacteria of the coronavirus are microscopic and much smaller than other types of bacteria that traditional PPE protects against. Experts say that, while PPE masks can't contain the virus bacteria alone, all masks can help prevent the spread of the virus because the bacteria attach itself to the water molecules emanating from our noses and mouths. Essentially, even a bandana or cotton shirt worn over our faces can potentially prevent us from spreading or contracting the virus.

Because of the CDC recommendations and dwindling supply, there's been an upsurge in the need for masks for essential personnel. All around the world, communities are taking action to make an abundance of homemade masks for those in need. Our real estate agents encourage you to join us and donate your handmade masks to the essential personnel in the Boise area.

Where to Donate Homemade Masks in Boise

Generally speaking, your donation of medical supplies and resources to any healthcare facility in the area will protect those at-risk the most, no matter how large or small the organization is. As the virus continues to spread, many healthcare facilities are formally requesting donations. Saint Alphonsus is accepting donations of homemade masks and lists their mask requirements at this link. Although St. Luke's Health Care System is currently not accepting hand-sewn masks, they are accepting other supplies and encourage Boise natives to donate their masks to the United Way. Groups like Idaho COVID 19 Mutual Aid Group are full of members trying to connect mask makers with those that need these vital supplies.

If you have the ability to make homemade face masks, we encourage you to follow these instructions from the CDC. These guidelines show you how to sew a mask and create one without sewing equipment. We hope that you and your families are safe and healthy during this difficult time.
